Fez
classified by UNESCO as one of the world heritage site FEZ, one of the most beautiful city of the arabic world, is the spiritual, intelectual and cultural capital of Morocco. The oldest imperial city of Morocco, Fez was founded on 789 after JC by Idriss the 1st, a descendant of the prophet Mohamed. His son, the sultan Idriss the 2nd, decided in 809 to make it the capital of his dynasty. Despite the dynastic wars and the periods where Fez was not the official capital of the country, the imperial city never stopped enlarging itself and embellishing its image. As early as 818, the sultan welcomed in his city 8 000 families of Muslim andalous. Fez is the most authentic city of North Africa. The intellectual radiance of its Koranic university (the famous Karaouiyne mosque) the treasures of its arabo- Andalusian art, the medieval médina of Fez el-bali and the big talent of its craftsmen, make it the guardian of the traditions of Islam. Finding the monuments in Fez is not an easy task! But, enter by the Bab Boujloud, the pretty blue and green door, and you will find the old world face to face. Try to visit the Mdersa Bou Inania and the Mosque Karaouine which is the heart of the Médina. This mosque was the biggest one of Morocco before the construction of the Mosque Hassan II in Casablanca. You will probably pass by the pretty place of En Nejjarine and the Zaouïa of Moulay Idriss, the holy place where rests the founder of the city, Moulay Idriss the 2nd. With its setting of zelliges and its wood canopy of cedar, the fountain of the place En Nejjarine is the most beautiful one in Fez. The Médersa El Attarine is a very pretty representation of the architecture hispano-mauresque eventhough it is less maintained than the Médersa Ben Youssef of Marrakesh. The Andalusian neighborhood can also be part of a very nice visit. The souks are surely the big attraction of Fez. The visit of the neighborhood of the Tanners is the most impressive one. To get rid of the hair, the skins are treated in limes baths during weeks and you will most likely see the tanners barefeet in baths of natural teinture. The tremendous spectacle of this work can be viewed from the summit of the tanners commerces. One advice: Accept the leaves of menthe proposed by the merchant at the entry, in order to support the sickening odors that you will confront above the baths! Pay attention while buying slippers, a bag or a thud in leather, because you will take a piece of Fez with you home: the “Fassien” leather does not lose easily its odor...! All what you have in the Souk is made in this city: henn, jewels... So if the craving takes you, enter the Souk for the pleasure of the eyes and bargain to take some presents and “memories” with you! |
